MIKADO box with a picture of the Emperor of Japan
Mikado is a Japanese word for the emperor,
apparently reflecting the situation when the pencil was released.

At that time, L&C Hardtmuth's Koh-i-noor pencil was a great success,
increasing the popularity of Siberian graphite.
Pencil companies used names related to "Oriental" for pencils to emphasize
that their products also used the highest quality Asian graphite.

The Mikado (or Mirado) pencil is a yellow barrel hexagonal pencil with a red band around the ferrule.

Early Mikado pencils used Long Ferrule, as can be seen in the advertisement.

It can be seen that the length of the ferrule is long,
unlike the Mikado (or Mirado) pencil of the standard-sized ferrule.

The eagle logo engraved on the pencil was designed realistically in the early days,
and it can be seen that it has been gradually simplified and changed to an eagle shape close to a straight line.

Package change of Mikado (or Mirado) pencil 1
The name Mikado was changed to Mirado during World War II,
as can be seen from Henry Petroski's Pencil.

“Japan`s bombing of Pearl Harbor immediately affected the war. On December 8, 1941,
Mikado Pencil changed its name to Mirado to wash away the Japanese atmosphere of its name."
Henry Petrowski's [Pencil] p.454

In 1969, Eagle Pencil Co. changed its name to Berol Mirado,
which was later acquired by Newell Brand and produced as Sanford and Papermate Mirado,
before production of pencils ceased in 1994.
